Being a “Women’s Organization” in DuPage County – What Does That Mean?

As Kenneth Noland said, “For me context is the key – from that comes the understanding of everything.” Context can greatly impact the meaning of a word or phrase, so it’s important to analyze what something may mean before making any assumptions. In a world of catchphrases, words like “women’s organization” can carry loaded meaning. What is a women’s organization and what does it mean to be one?

Caring Network has been serving women facing unplanned pregnancies since 1981. Caring Network as a Women’s Organization in DuPage County

Caring Network began as a grassroots pro-life organization in DuPage County in 1981.  A group of people, committed to protecting and valuing life, joined together to support women in the midst of an unplanned pregnancy, rescuing their children from abortion.  By providing emotional support, spiritual counsel, and practical help, lives have been saved and impacted for almost 40 years.  As a women’s organization, our aim is to empower women to choose life for their children and protect them from the pain of abortion.

What is a “women’s organization” anyway?

WOMEN’S ORGANIZATIONS PROVIDE SERVICES GEARED TOWARDS FEMALES.

Women’s organizations are able to target a specific demographic. Although we offer support to our clients’ male partners—providing information and referrals specific for his situation—our primary services are for women who are encountering an unexpected pregnancy.

WOMEN’S ORGANIZATIONS IDENTIFY THE NEEDS OF WOMEN AND SEEK TO MEET THEM.

By being heavily involved in serving women facing an unexpected pregnancy, we can learn to identify needs specific to that population.  The expert staff at Caring Network are trained in providing information, counsel, and support for women in the midst of an unplanned pregnancy, while also addressing a woman’s specific situation and individual needs.

WOMEN’S ORGANIZATIONS AREN’T EXCLUSIVE TO FEMALES.

A woman’s organization often means that the services provided are geared towards females, not necessarily that it’s an “all-female” organization.  At Caring Network, our current client-facing staff are all female, able to provide connection and support without any potential barriers.  However, men and women collaborate together within the organization, regardless of gender, on ways we can better serve our target demographic.

Women’s organizations can take on many shapes and forms. In a changing world, the meaning of certain phrases can become loaded—taking on a certain bent according to the cultural tide.  It’s important to do some research to find out about an organization’s mission and vision, learning about how they implement their focus on women’s issues.
