John Krasinski’s new at-home show “Some Good News” has been receiving a lot of positive attention these days. In times where social media, news outlets, and even our day-to-day conversations can be inundated with warnings, cautions, and difficulties, it’s helpful to take some time to focus on the bright side. Encouraging things are happening in the world around us as people find new ways to creatively connect. Needs are being met in new ways and the body of Christ has joined together to continue to further the kingdom of God in the world.
Caring Network has been serving women facing unplanned pregnancy in the Chicagoland area for almost 40 years. As we adapt to changing times, we are creatively serving clients and connecting with partners and churches in new ways. Focusing on the Positive
During any season of change, it can be helpful to take a step back and focus on the positive. Messages of negativity and fear are heard every day through social media, news reports, or conversations with friends. It can be easy to get swept away in a sea of negative thoughts. As believers, we know that “God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7) Also, we are called to think on things that are “true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and worthy of praise.” (Philippians 4:8) Taking time to reflect on encouraging, praise-worthy things in life helps provide a renewed perspective.
Finding New Ways to Connect
As your perspective begins to shift to what God is doing in and through this situation, it can be helpful to put new habits into place. This new season allows for times of reflection and establishing new routines. Here are a few ways you could incorporate positive ways to connect:
- Take a break from social media or too much time watching the news.
- Go on a prayer walk around your neighborhood or spend some time each day listening to worship music.
- Reach out to a friend, family member, or church leader for prayer support and to engage in positive, uplifting conversations.
- Spend time with family members that allows for positive interaction such as games, bible study, crafts, or learning a new skill together.
- Send an email, text or make a quick call to a friend you haven’t connected with in a while. Share what God has been doing in your life.
Meet the Needs of Others
One beneficial way to attain a shift in perspective is by reaching out to meet the needs of others. Are there local outreach opportunities you can engage in while maintaining social distance? Reach out to local organizations such as food pantries, homeless shelters, elderly assistance programs, and your local church or parish to learn more about opportunities to serve those around you.
