Non Profit Mission Statement: Why It’s Important

For any ministry or faith-based non-profit organization, vision is essential. Romans 8:28 says: “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” As a non-profit, a clear vision that aligns with God’s will for the future is a foundation that sets us apart.

Any organization aspiring to perform godly work must be motivated by purposeful action to remain connected to God and listen for where He intends to lead. Whether it’s a calling to serve those facing an unplanned pregnancy, reduce homelessness, increase financial stability, or any other purpose, it’s vital to have an unwavering vision.

Caring Network answered God’s call to serve women facing unplanned pregnancies in 1981. For nearly forty years, we have offered free services and compassionate support. Our continued partnership with individuals and churches has helped our life-affirming mission grow. We understand the role we play in rescuing women and their children from abortion. That’s why we must abide by God’s purpose for us and expand our ministry’s outreach. If you’d like to learn how you can become a part of growing our centers, contact us today!

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VISION, MISSION, AND VALUES FOR NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS?

It’s easy to interchange the terms vision, mission, and values, so we will discuss the differences here.

VISION

It is impossible to know where you’re going without a vision, and the same principle applies to non-profit organizations. The vision is often for the benefit of those working with the organization to remind them where the organization is going and help to stay on the path to get there. The vision can also be shared with others to tell them what the organization is aspiring to do or become. Most organizations have a vision statement consisting of one concise sentence that inspirationally describes the change that the organization is desiring to achieve through its work. For example:

  • ASPCA: “That the United States is a humane community in which all animals are treated with respect and kindness.”
  • Habitat for Humanity: “A world where everyone has a decent place to live.”
  • World Vision: “For every child, life in all its fullness; Our prayer for every heart, the will to make it so.”

A non-profit organization’s vision will typically answer the following questions:

  • Where are we going?
  • What future do we want to create?
  • How will our organization impact the world if we achieve our goals?

Once an organization understands its vision, it needs a mission to fulfill the vision.

MISSION

The mission describes what an organization needs to do to fulfill the vision. The vision is broad, and the mission is more specific but not as detail-oriented as goals are.

Compare the vision statements of the organizations listed above with their mission statements.

  • ASPCA: “To provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.”
  • Habitat for Humanity: “Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope.”
  • World Vision: “WORLD VISION is an international partnership of Christians whose mission is to follow our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ in working with the poor and oppressed to promote human transformation, seek justice, and bear witness to the good news of the Kingdom of God.”

An organization’s mission answers the following questions :

  • What do we do?
  • How will we do it?
  • Whom do we do it for?
  • What value are we bringing?

VALUES

An organization’s values provide clarity about the core beliefs that navigate its direction and choices regarding every aspect of how it operates organizationally and interpersonally.

Now that we have explained the difference between an organization’s vision, mission, and values, let’s discuss why vision is important for non-profit organizations.

WHY IS VISION IMPORTANT FOR NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS?

As we discussed earlier, a guiding question for any non-profit organization is one that asks, “Where are we going?” The answer to this question helps to build a solid foundation for the organization’s future. A vision can create a mental picture that not only offers a long-term direction but grants a new perspective. Here at Caring Network, we trust in God’s wisdom and are confident He constructed the plan we have for our future.

Developing a vision takes time, but it’s worth examining the variety of routes your non-profit can follow. How will you place staff and volunteers in roles that utilize their unique talents? What is the purpose behind your work? More importantly, how will you achieve your goals? While there are usually twists and turns in every journey, having a plan can provide you with a roadmap that will ultimately lead you to your final destination.

  • Help women choose life over abortion through practical assistance.
  • Display integrity and earn trust in every interaction and service.
  • Support and present adoption as a viable choice.
  • Never discriminate on any basis in providing services to the community.

Caring Network seeks to be a place of refuge for women who feel overwhelmed by an unplanned pregnancy. Our staff models Christ extending nonjudgmental support while sharing His truth.

We also strive to strengthen families by ensuring pregnant women have the resources they need to feel confident in making a parenting or adoption plan. Through one-on-one sessions, we help women process their decisions while also offering them reliable information.

Our centers have established a credible reputation within the community as a trusted resource for women. We have repeatedly witnessed the need for the life-giving services we provide. There are many communities in our state where women do not have access to pregnancy resource centers. One of our current goals is to reach even more women by establishing 25 new pregnancy resource centers by 2025.
